Morning Breath: Not as Normal as You Think

Many of us wake up each day expecting that dreaded morning breath, assuming it’s an unavoidable part of life. But what if I told you that it doesn’t have to be that way? The result of my experiment has revealed that morning breath might be more preventable than commonly thought.

My Experiment with Mouthwash

For a long time, I have been using baking soda as part of my oral hygiene routine, and as a result, I never experienced morning breath. However, I decided to experiment by substituting baking soda with a  commercial mouthwash, specifically Listerine. The change was driven by curiosity and the mouthwash’s claims of comprehensive oral hygiene benefits.

The Unintended Consequence

To my surprise, after switching to Listerine, I started experiencing morning breath. This was unexpected and quite disappointing, considering that I had never had this issue while using baking soda. After some time, I decided to revert to my old routine with baking soda, and almost immediately, my morning breath disappeared again. This experience reaffirmed my belief in the effectiveness of baking soda in preventing morning breath.

The Impact of Bad Breath

Bad breath can significantly affect how others perceive us. It’s a harsh reality that bad breath can make someone seem unattractive, impacting personal and professional relationships. However, it’s a topic that many people find difficult to address, often avoiding it to spare someone’s feelings. This means it’s crucial for us to take personal responsibility for our dental hygiene and ensure that we are not unknowingly creating uncomfortable situations for ourselves and others.

Common Causes of Bad Breath

It’s surprisingly easy for your breath to smell off while going about your day. Factors like being hungry, suffering from sinus allergies, adding milk to coffee or tea, forgetting to rinse your mouth after a meal or simply skipping the brushing and flossing night-time routine. Maintaining fresh breath is achievable with the right products and routines.

Oral Hygiene and Aging

A common misconception is that losing teeth with age is inevitable. While teeth do wear down over time, developing cavities or gum disease and consequently losing teeth isn’t a given if proper oral hygiene is maintained. Regular flossing and brushing at least twice a day can significantly mitigate these risks.

Dr. Harold Katz, a well-known dentist and bacteriologist, emphasizes that "good oral hygiene, including proper brushing and flossing, can prevent most dental problems" . Similarly, the American Dental Association highlights that "consistent and proper oral care can preserve your teeth for a lifetime" .

Conclusion

Morning breath isn’t an unavoidable fate, and with the right practices, it can be effectively managed. Baking soda has proven its worth in my daily routine, and it might just work for you too. Moreover, maintaining your teeth as you age is within reach. With diligent care, including regular flossing and brushing, you can enjoy good oral health for years to come.

For those struggling with morning breath or concerned about their dental health, consider revisiting the basics. Sometimes, the answers lie in simple, tried-and-true methods.
